CHIP'S POLITICALLY-CORRECT MOMENT OF THE WEEK
I was witness to a political correctness (is that even a word?) train wreck today in the elevator. Let me set up the motley cast of characters for you:
Me, some redneck woman, what I assume was the redneck woman's mother and a early 50-ish woman holding a little asian girl (probably 3 yrs. old). I assumed correctly the 50-ish woman was the non-paternal grandmother of this adopted little foreign girl. Anyway, the doors close and we start going up and the mother of the redneck starts playfully pinching this little girl's arm and the little girl is giggling. So, redneck woman says to the 50-ish woman, "Is she oriental?" Ok, strike one, right? I'm pretty sure the word she was searching for was "asian." But, wait, there's more! Before the woman can even answer, the redneck says, "She looks oriental or like an indian (strike two)." Hmmm, indian, you say. I think "native american" is the PC term. But, to my surprise the woman took it all in stride. She just laughed and said, "She's chinese." I wanted to say to the redneck, "Any more questions, Sherlock?"
